Tone Burst Diode Laser Spectroscopy,

U. S. Patent 6,611,335, issued August 26, 2003

Tone burst spectroscopy is an alternative to wavelength modulation or frequency modulation spectroscopy. Tone burst can be viewed as a generalization two-tone spectroscopy, but with a great deal more flexibility. For instance, the modulation "tone" can be a triangle wave or even a noise wave. This patent covers a number of improvements to tone burst spectroscopy, such as synchronizing the tone frequency to the burst frequency so as to suppress effects from modulation of the laser's amplitude, and provides for a method to lock the laser's wavelength while implementing tone burst spectroscopy.
