Southwest Sciences Inc

Ph. D. (Chemistry), University of Colorado, 1999
B.A. (Chemistry), Rice University, 1994

Dr. Zondlo joined the staff of Southwest Sciences as a Senior Research Scientist in May, 2002. From 1999 to 2002, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Advanced Study Program/Atmospheric Chemistry Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Zondlo's research focused on the development of an airborne inlet and instrument for the detection of gas phase nitric acid in the troposphere using selective ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry. At the University of Colorado, Dr. Zondlo investigated atmospheric heterogeneous reactions using electron impact mass spectrometry, FTIR reflection absorption spectroscopy, and Knudsen cell reactors. He has been a member of the American Geophysical Union since 1994.

Currently, Dr. Zondlo is applying chemical ionization techniques to state-of-the-art miniature mass spectrometers to develop a lightweight, airborne-based instrument for the detection of tropospheric ammonia. Dr. Zondlo's other research accomplishments include 1) selective, fast (5 s), and sensitive (10 pptv limit of detection) measurements of nitric acid from the NASA P3-B aircraft as part of the NASA TRACE-P field experiment in spring 2001 off the coast of Asia 2) first spectroscopic and kinetic measurements of the interaction of nitric acid with water-ice surfaces under conditions representative of cirrus clouds and airplane condensation trails 3) identification of the condensed phase products of stratospherically-important species on model polar stratospheric cloud surfaces important in polar ozone depletion 4) measurements of OH, H2SO4, methanesulfonic acid, HO2, and RO2 using chemical ionization mass spectrometry on NSF- and NASA-funded atmospheric chemistry field campaigns 5) spectroscopic studies of the free OH stretch on the surfaces of microporous ice. 6) development of trace gas instruments using miniature mass spectrometers for NASA Johnson Space Center and NASA Glenn Research Center.

Dr. Zondlo has authored 15 publications. mzondlo@swsciences.com
